Top Three Reasons Your Business Needs a Blog

Business Blogging

Business Blogging

Since I’ve decided to start blogging on this site again, I figured that it would be appropriate for my first post to tell you why you consider business blogging.  I’ve definitely noticed an increase in businesses utilizing social media and blogging over the past three years but the numbers are still alarmingly low.  Every small business that has a web presence (which should be all of you) should include a blog into their online marketing efforts.  Blogging can be used as a means of marketing, public relations, branding and more.

I know that, as a small business owner your days are generally completely full from the moment you wake up to the moment you finally make it home.  I’m right there with you when you take off to the office in the wee hours of the morning, arrive home later then you wanted to, and then continue working more from home after dinner and family time is over.  In fact, I’m writing this post just past midnight before I head to bed!

There are a multitude of reasons that you should consider business blogging and we’ll be going over three of them today.  I would consider these the most important three reasons that your business should be blogging, but that is of course subjective and there are plenty more strong reasons for you to be blogging!

Three Reasons You Should Consider Business Blogging

  1. Business blogging is one of the most cost effective marketing solutions for any business.  Marketing is all about the bottom line, and blogging adds to it in many ways.  You are naturally increasing your search engine rankings by adding quality content to your blog on a consistent basis.  The nature of blogs makes Google love them, and the quality content and natural links that result from people linking to your posts will increase your overall search engine rankings and presence.
  2. Pleasing your customers is the most important value any business can have, and blogging allows you to connect with your customers on a personal level.  You can keep them coming back to your site, reading your content and enjoying the time that you put into it.  Customers want more for their money, and you are providing them a service they will appreciate by putting out quality content that they are interested in.
  3. A blog allows you to get feedback from your customers and let them know that you are listening.  They want to see you paying attention to, and meeting their demands as a customer.  Put out surveys on your blog and see what your customers want, and then give it to them!  Utilizing your blog to showcase new features or products in your arsenal that customers have requested will go a long way towards building your brand and the relationship with those customers.

Blogging is a powerful tool and all businesses should at least consider adding a blog to their marketing activities.  Take into consideration the time it will take you and make a choice based on the needs of your customers and your business.  Once you’ve made the decision to start a blog for your business, make sure that you create a firm strategy and stay consistent in your efforts.  The last thing you want to do is start blogging, gain a following and then disappoint them with a lack of new updates after the first few months.

  1. Taking action is, as always, the big first step, but consider your blog an investment of time, if not money or other resources. You get nothing for nothing; the richer your content appears, the better your results will be.

  2. What should lawyers do for their business? Most of the things they do are done in confidentiality and the content they’d release to the public is a couple of months worth, at best.

    Jeff,

There are many examples of legal blogs out there, try checking out http://blogs.wsj.com/law/ for a pretty good example. While you can’t breach client confidentiality, you can post your comments on recent case rulings, speculations about why the outcome came that way, or what you would do differently. If you’re a criminal attorney, you can post what not to do when you’re pulled over, bailbond references, general tips, et al. Try to bridge the gap between jargon and common sense and explain to your readers WHY they need an attorney.

ANY field can run a blog.

    Thanks,
    Ryan
