I’ve been getting a lot of questions on how I target my demographics on Facebook. The offers that I run there vary between a large set of demographics. A lot of offers, especially email submits have a pretty common and easy to guess demographic that fits it best.
Obviously most of it still comes down to testing but one of the tools I have found and use frequently to help at least get an idea for who you should target your ads to is the Microsoft Adlabs Demographics Prediction Tool. Your able to type in a set of query keywords or type in a URL.
Make sure you have the right radio button selected, I’ve made the mistake of trying to type a URL using query and it doesn’t work so well. There are several techniques you can use to ensure the best results.
Typically what I will do depends on the type of offer. If I am promoting an email submit offer and I want the demographics, obviously I am going to use the query selection and just type in whatever the prize that I am giving away is.
However if I’m promoting basically anything else, I will use my seed keyword. So for example if I was promoting Easy Google or something similar I would use the keyword “make money online”.
Sometimes I will also use the URL feature to see how the two modes differ. Most of the time they are pretty close. This tool allows you to narrow down your demographics if you have no idea who to promote to.
However testing is still a very important part of your job, so you will need to test regardless of how targeted you think the age range may be. This tool is not a crutch, it is a supplement to get you going in the right direction, and it might not always work.
My advice to you would be to use it to get a broad range and then age test for each year. So you will create one completely seperate ad with a different tracking keyword for each age. I typically make mine look something like 18USM(18 year old males in the United States).
