Keyword reach domains are great to get a site started, but unique domains are great for brand. This is a hard call.

It's a very fine art. Deft and clever usage of keywords in your posts combined with a smart domain name is the key. Experience is usually very important in this area. If you're new, it's best to take the advice of someone you know who has been at it for a while.

The best way would be to make the keyword become your brand name. It somehow requires time and eventually people will remember you by the keyword in your domain and will think of you when they see similar words.

For long term blogs you should go with branding over keywords, for short term blogs Id pick keywords for quick rankings.

I used both and in terms of ranking, the full-of-keywords-stuffed-domain.com didn’t really help…with a good linking campaign you can get them equal in the serps. If you’re not actively searching for links it will help, like you said.
